How does one become a teacher?

Training to become an Alexander Technique teacher happens through an ongoing process of self-observation, inquiry, choice, and transformation. One learns by living through the experiences of letting go of habits and beliefs and by allowing profound personal growth and development to take place. Students deepen their study and application of the Alexander Technique in the context of and relative to their professional careers and life activities. They learn the skilled touch, characteristic of an Alexander Technique teacher in experiential and practical settings and situations. Students are trained to articulate and apply the principles and concepts of the Alexander work to themselves, their profession, and their lives so as to be able to touch and teach others, the principles, and concepts outlined in F.M. Alexander’s writings practiced throughout his life and recognized around the world as the hallmark of the Alexander Technique.

To embody the qualities necessary for certification takes time (around 1,600 hours) and can be condensed or spread out over the course of 3 to 6 years. Students desiring to become Alexander Technique Teachers would, therefore, need to plan on devoting themselves full-time for 3 years or part-time for 6 in order to complete their training in the Alexander Technique. Others might decide to complete 1 year as a personal deepening into the work or in order to be able to decide if they wish to continue training.

This course has a flexible schedule that adapts as much as possible to the needs of the students. The course includes group instruction through observation, demonstration, and hands-on practice in various daily activities and life situations. There are Community Classes and many apprenticeship opportunities for students nearing graduation. Tuition also includes all visiting guest teachers and extra workshops organized by Corinne Cassini that take place at Light in Being Alexander Studios in Boone, NC.
